Schönow Heath

The Schönower Heide, located on the northwestern border of the village of Schönow, is a 533-hectare nature reserve in Brandenburg, owned by the city of Berlin. The area, which was used as a military training area from the beginning of the 20th century until 1991, received its protected status in 2000. Since then, the Schönow Heath has also been designated as a European fauna-flora habitat. In addition to an open heath landscape with extensive broom heather areas, there are other biotopes worthy of protection in the nature reserve, including sandy grassland and inland dune areas as well as the wet meadows of a Rohrpfuhl. In 2009, fallow deer, mouflon deer and red deer were released into a fenced area of about 140 hectares, which contributes significantly to keeping the heathland open.
Two circular hiking trails of approx. 1.5 and 5.0 km in length lead through the nature reserve and offer the opportunity to learn interesting facts about the Schönower Heide and the grazing project with numerous information boards. From an observation tower, wide views over the heath landscape open up. The Schönower Heide e.V. interest association, founded in 2006, regularly invites you to guided tours and supports the efforts to preserve the nature reserve with various events and work assignments. With its children's group "Heidekinder", the association is also active in environmental education.
