European Youth Leisure and Meetings Centre Werbellinsee

The European Youth Leisure and Encounter Centre in Werbellinsee is a youth meeting centre located in the municipality of Joachimsthal, in the district of Barnim. Under the name of the Wilhelm Pieck Pioneer Republic, the institution was the central camp of the pioneers of the pioneering Ernst Thälmann organization in the GDR until 1989. From 1990 to 2004, the state of Brandenburg was the patron and since 2004 WS Werbellinsee GmbH & Co. KG has operated the facility.

In 1949, the GDR Council of Ministers decided to build the pioneer republic and made 18 million marks available. The architect of the buildings was Richard Paulick, and Reinhold Lingner was responsible for the landscaping. The facility was inaugurated on 16 July 1952 by the then President of the GDR, Wilhelm Pieck. The operator was the Free German Youth.
