Liebenberger Lake

The Liebenberger See is a 51-hectare lake located west of Kienbaum, a district of the Brandenburg municipality of Grünheide in the Oder-Spree district.
The lake is situated in the southern part of the glacial Buckow Ridge between the high plateaus of Barnim and Lebuser Land. In this ridge, it forms the northernmost link of a four-part chain of lakes and drains the entire chain through its outflow Mühlenfließ into the Löcknitz, a tributary of the Spree. In 2004, the profile according to the EU Water Framework Directive characterized the maximum eight-meter-deep Liebenberger See as a calcium-rich, non-stratified lake with a relatively large catchment area, rating its ecological and chemical overall condition as good. At its southeastern shore is the Federal Performance Center Kienbaum of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. The village of Liebenberg, which gave the lake its name and is located in the neighboring town of Kienbaum, held a relatively high significance in the Middle Ages due to its location at a pass of the trade route Berlin – Frankfurt/Oder.
