Sonnenburg

Sonnenburg is an inhabited district of the town of Bad Freienwalde in the Märkisch-Oderland district. Until the beginning of the 17th century, there was a castle of the von Uchtenhagen family, which fell into disrepair in the following years. There was also an economic farm, which was converted in 1618 into an estate of the Freienwalde office after the von Uchtenhagen properties were transferred into state ownership. From this economic farm or estate, the present-day place emerged, which was an independent municipality from 1929 until its incorporation into the town of Bad Freienwalde in 1957.
Sonnenburg is located just under 5 km in a straight line from the town of Bad Freienwalde and about 4 kilometers southwest of Altranft. About 1.5 km south of the place is Franzenshof, a settlement belonging to the Lüdersdorf district of the town of Wriezen. The locality is situated in a woodland landscape with heath and lakes. It can be reached via Altranft and via a road from Bad Freienwalde. The district of Sonnenburg borders the town of Bad Freienwalde to the north, Altranft and Rathsdorf to the east, Lüdersdorf to the south, and Haselberg district to the southwest and west.
