Seifersdorf Castle

The Seifersdorf Castle in the town of Seifersdorf, located north of the Dresden city limits in the Bautzen district, is a castle built around 1530, which was remodeled in the style of Neo-Gothicism between 1818 and 1826 according to plans by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Surrounding the Seifersdorf Castle is a landscaped castle park, the design of which continues in the shaping of the Seifersdorfer Valley by Christina von Brühl.
Already in the first half of the 12th century, a wooden water castle was built at the current site of the castle. After being destroyed by a fire, a stone building was constructed in the area of today's ballroom on the ground floor. This was expanded in the 13th century with the addition of a gatehouse, which is today's west entrance. In a fourth phase, the building was extended to the east and later a mirrored building oriented to the existing south wing was added. The reconstruction by Karl Friedrich Schinkel connected the two parts and supplemented the outlines to achieve an approximately symmetrical floor plan. A U-shaped floor plan with a courtyard enclosed on three sides on the east side was created, which is connected to the castle park by a stone bridge. The castle park was also redesigned in the English style during the remodeling.
