Village Church Spremberg

The Evangelical-Lutheran village church of Spremberg, today the main church of the two places of worship in the town of Neusalza-Spremberg, belongs like the Trinity Church Neusalza to the Ephory of Löbau-Zittau of the Evangelical-Lutheran State Church of Saxony.
The larger of the two churches of the town, which was united only in 1920, once the church of the village community of Spremberg, is much older than the former "Exulantenkirche" Neusalza. The Spremberg church can trace its beginnings back to the 13th century. The village settlement of Spremberg arose during the feudal German eastward settlement through the clearing of the area at that time as a forest strip village by colonists from Franconia and Thuringia on both sides of the upper course of the Spree River. Hertwicus de Sprewemberch, who is documented in 1242, is regarded as the settlement leader or locator of Spremberg. Any sacred historical predecessor structure can only be speculated about. It is assumed that it was built between the years 1230 and 1270. It could have been a simple half-timbered building made of wood and clay, covered with the usual thatched roof, as the Franconian and Thuringian settlers also applied this building style in their new home – the Upper Lusatian Highland. In any case, the new German settlers thought strategically and built their church in a central location on the plateau of the hill, which steeply descends to the Spree on three sides and later became known as Kirchberg. The hill also served them as a bastion – a refuge during times of war. At the same location, the construction of the first church from field stones later took place.
