Jewish Cemetery Weingarten

The Jewish Cemetery Weingarten is a Jewish cemetery in Weingarten, a municipality in the district of Karlsruhe in northern Baden-Württemberg. The cemetery is a protected cultural monument.
The deceased of the Jewish community of Weingarten were initially buried in the Jewish cemetery of Worms until around 1632 and afterwards in the Jewish cemetery of Obergrombach. In 1833, a separate cemetery was established; nevertheless, Jews from Weingarten partially used the Obergrombach cemetery until 1924, apparently because relatives were buried there. The Weingarten cemetery in the Gewann Effenstiel has an area of 14.25 ares and today there are still 35 gravestones present, including four for children. A memorial plaque in the cemetery for seven Jewish fallen soldiers from Weingarten in the First World War comes from the local synagogue, which was devastated during the November pogroms in 1938 and shortly afterward demolished. A Jew from Weingarten had taken custody of the memorial plaque; presumably in 1940 it was erected in the cemetery, before in October 1940, 23 of the 24 Jews still living in Weingarten were deported in the Wagner-Bürckel action.
