Old Protestant Church

The Old Protestant Church in Steinsfurt, a district of the large district town of Sinsheim in the Rhine-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg, was built between 1769 and 1771 by the Reformed community of the place and used as a church until the dedication of the current Protestant Church in 1937.
Steinsfurt was reformed in 1556 during the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate. From the 17th century, there were a Reformed, a Lutheran, and a Catholic community. The historical church of the place came to the Catholic community during the Palatine Church division in 1705 but was still used by Lutherans and Reformed until the 1760s. The Lutherans built their own church in 1767, and the Reformed community began constructing the church building discussed here in 1769. After the merger of Lutherans and Reformed into the Protestant regional church in Baden, the Lutheran church was sold in 1823, and the Reformed church was used by the united community. By the end of the 19th century, the church was already in a dilapidated state. In 1890, the bell tower was demolished due to structural unsoundness. Plans for a new building were significantly delayed due to World War I, so that the foundation stone for the current Protestant Church was not laid until 1936, and it was occupied the following year. After the war, the old church initially served as a cinema and later as an inn. Today, a pub is located in the building.
