St. Willibald

The St. Willibald Church is an evangelical-Lutheran church in Schambach, a district of the town of Treuchtlingen in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. It is part of the Evangelical-Lutheran deanery of Pappenheim. The building is listed as a historical monument under the monument number D-5-77-173-136 in the Bavarian Monument Register. The medieval and early modern findings in the area of the church and its predecessor buildings are additionally registered as archaeological monuments. The postal address is Zum Wirtsbuck 1. The church's patronage is dedicated to St. Willibald of Eichstätt.
The current church, situated within an old cemetery wall, dates back to the late 14th century with its oldest part, the chancel tower with a wide helmet roof; the nave was rebuilt in 1739. Since 1480, the current patronage has been named Willibald; the right of presentation belonged to the Marshal of Pappenheim. Until 1669, the village church was a filial church of Dietfurt, located three kilometers away in Middle Franconia, after which the present double parish of Dietfurt-Schambach was formed. The two-pillar altar from 1722 is Baroque with a later altar painting, and the pulpit dates from 1701. The baptismal font with putto masks is dated 1625. Under the west gallery is a box-like structure known as the "Bauernstand". The cemetery wall of the fortified church dates from the 19th century.
