Observation Tower Erbeskopf

The Erbeskopf, at 816 m the highest elevation of the Hunsrück, is also the highest mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate and the highest German mountain on the left bank of the Rhine. The summit, which had been a military exclusion zone since 1939, was occupied by American troops in 1945 and served for many years as an important NATO base during the Cold War. In 1971, a 12 m high observation tower was built outside the exclusion zone, from which one can still enjoy a wonderful view over the Hunsrück heights today. Since 2004, the barbed wires have been cleared away and most of the Erbeskopf has become accessible to visitors again. In addition to the observation tower, radar facilities, and a weather station, there is a recreational and winter sports center at Erbeskopf with ski lifts and a summer toboggan run. Furthermore, the Hunsrückhaus environmental education center at the foot of the mountain offers a lot of information about the region.
