Saint-Catharine Church

The St. Castor Church is a former collegiate church in the German town of Karden. The impressive church building is also known as Moseldom.
On the foundations of a Carolingian church, construction began in the year 1183 on a Romanesque choir with apse, flank towers, and transept. The nave, with the main aisle and the lower side aisles, already shows the first features of the emerging Gothic style. The oldest part is the western tower with outer walls that are sometimes as much as 1.20 meters thick. The tower was raised above the bell chamber with two additional floors in the year 1699 and received a Baroque crown. No weather vane was placed on the spire, but the star of the Three Kings was. The upper lintel of the outer portal on the south side dates from 1121 from the previous structure and was integrated into the new construction. The door of the northern portal is, like that of the southern portal, made of very old pine wood and equipped with iron fittings. Once, this door led to the former cloister, a part of which is now used as a sacristy.
