Electoral Saxon Distance Column Altenberg

The listed Electoral Saxon Distance Column Altenberg is one of the postal milestones that were erected in the Electorate of Saxony in the first half of the 18th century on behalf of the Saxon Elector Friedrich August I by the Land and Border Commissioner Adam Friedrich Zürner. It is located on the Platz des Bergmanns directly on the Bundesstraße 170 in the eastern ore mountain town of Altenberg in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains.
The column was improperly restored around 1900. In the process, the old distances were destroyed and replaced by the inscription Stadt Altenberg 1722. During the Soviet bombing raid after the end of the war on May 10, 1945, the column was destroyed, re-erected in 1955 and restored in 1959. In 1984, the council of the city of Altenberg decided to completely renew the column. The historical inscriptions were also reconstructed by the research group Electoral Saxon Postal Milestones. In 1987, the column copy was placed on the original pedestal, which had been made by the Leumer company in Hänichen. The old coat of arms is in the Mining Museum Zinnwäsche Altenberg.
