Figure field

The Figurenfeld is a sculpture field located on a slope in a meadow near Eichstätt. It consists of 78 mostly life-sized figures by the sculptor and painter Alois Wünsche-Mitterecker. The artist wanted to create a "Monumentum perpetuum," a memorial for eternity, a warning against war, in which there are no winners and losers. The installation of the figures took place from 1958 until the artist's death in 1975. The Figurenfeld is unfinished. Since 1976, the Figurenfeld has been protected as a historical monument.

The Figurenfeld resembles a battlefield. The figures are arranged haphazardly, almost chaotically: the field has no central starting point and does not reveal itself through a clear path. The sculptures depict fighters and victims – falling, crawling, and lying on the ground. There are no winners and no losers. Three steles with reliefs are somewhat more restrained and form a memorial site. They depict prisoners warning against war and violence.
