Walheim Nature Reserve

The Walheim nature reserve is located in the area of the city of Aachen, east of the city center of Walheim and surrounds the so-called "Freizeitgelände Walheim", which itself is designated as a landscape conservation area.

The Inde flows through the middle of the nature reserve, to the right and left are the old quarries of the former Walheim lime kiln factory with the lime kiln path. The soil is of Middle Devonian limestone. To the northeast is an old quarry with dry grasslands on the flat slopes and on the edges of the quarry. In the quarry itself, the vegetation is patchy. In some places, bush encroachment has begun. At the deepest point, a lake has formed, partly shallow, partly several meters deep. In the water you can find floating spawning weed, fluttering and limbed rush and pond ledges. On both sides of the Inde, a hornbeam forest grows from coppice farming. Some plots are reforested with spruce. Meanwhile, an alder-ash forest grows. To the northwest is another quarry with high rock walls, similar in vegetation to the other quarry. To the south, a larger lake has formed in a quarry with vegetation similar to that in the northeast.
