The history of the place began with the systematic extraction of peat, which started in 1906 in the south of Tungerloh-Pröbsting. The workers' settlement associated with the peat factory developed into today's district. In 1912, a primary school was established in the village. After World War II, displaced persons from the former German eastern territories settled here. The village, which belonged to Tungerloh-Pröbsting until 1969, became part of the municipality of Gescher in 1969. In 1972, the inauguration of the Hochmoor Cemetery took place, and three years later, the inauguration of St. Stephanus Church followed. In 1983, the school building was transformed into the Heimatshaus, which is operated by the Hochmoor Heimatverein.
Until 1987, Hochmoor housed an external branch of the Münster Prison.[1]
The name of the village dates back to the White Venn. This raised bog was the largest marshland in Westphalia until the middle of the last century. Today, it has largely been drained. Near the village, the Fürstenkuhle and the wet meadow area of the Kuhlenvenn are designated as nature reserves as remnants of the White Venn.
