The town hall at Geistmarkt was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1938/39, destroyed in the war, and rebuilt according to the old model. In its council chamber, there is the Emmerich tapestry, a wall hanging made from natural products from the Lower Rhine, depicting the industry based in Emmerich. The renowned Emmerich artist Bernd Terhorst (died 1986) designed this tapestry in 1940/41, and his wife Elisabeth (died 1956) executed the weaving work. It was only after 10 years of work – with a war-related interruption – that the masterpiece could be handed over to its purpose.
