Klein Rosenburg Castle

Klein Rosenburg Castle, also known as Groß Rosenburg Castle or Rosenburg, is a listed building in Klein Rosenburg, a district of the town of Barby in the Salzlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In the local register of monuments, the castle is listed as an architectural monument under the registration number 094 60279 and as a ground monument under the registration number 428310202 since 1960.
The hilltop castle was a medieval round castle, the first mention of which dates back to the year 965 as Rosburg in a deed of donation from the Ottonians to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. It stood on a hill on the edge of the Saale lowlands and was the last castle before the Saale flows into the Elbe. The double gate complex was built in the 12th century and the Zwinger in the 16th century. From 1717 to 1936, the castle was the seat of a Prussian office and a domain. From about 1770 the castle was converted into a castle, demolished again in 1798 and rebuilt by the Counts of Barby as an administrative building in Renaissance style with a round corner oriel and used as a residence. In 1937, it was expanded into a Gauschulungsburg. In April 1945, the complex partially burned down and was demolished together with the farm buildings in the course of the same year, so that only the original moat, the ring wall and the double gate system with Romanesque gate tower at the front gate remained. The castle ruins were uncovered again in 1995. A partial restoration took place, during which new ponds and a new park were also created.
