Robber's Cave

The Robber's Cave is the popularly known name for a disused mining tunnel in the Haldensleben district of Hundisburg. Copper was mined here in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is entered in the local register of monuments as a cultural-historical and technically significant testimony to historic copper mining in the region. The tunnel is located in an agricultural area in the Olbe Valley in the immediate vicinity of the Olbe, about 1.5 kilometres west of the centre of Hundisburg, on a dirt road between Hundisburg and Klein-Rottmersleben.

The first commercial development was established in Haldensleben and the surrounding area in the 15th century with the establishment of copper mines – including on the Papenberg and the Kienberg. However, these farms soon went out of business due to a lack of profitability. In later times, tunnels were repeatedly built in the region, such as the mine tunnel near Hundisburg in the 18th century, which is now known as the "Robber's Cave". After closure, copper mining was briefly resumed in the first half of the 19th century under Johann Gottlob Nathusius. Nathusius needed copper for processing in the copper hammer he operated in Hundisburg. As an accommodation house for the miners, he had the nearby colliery house built in 1824. The tunnel was driven about 15 meters deep into the greywacke there.
