Training Center Großer Ziegenberg

The Großer Ziegenberg training centre in Ballenstedt is a building complex that has a past as a training ground for the two German dictatorships of the 20th century. Secluded in the forest on the outskirts of the village, a state National Political Education Institute was founded there in 1934. From 1936, the Napola Anhalt was housed there for nine years. From 1949 onwards, decades of use as the Wilhelm Liebknecht district party school followed the Halle district leadership of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. Currently, the listed building is largely empty, and a usage concept is still pending.
The "Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalt Anhalt" was one of 39 boarding secondary schools that were founded after the National Socialist seizure of power in 1933. The one in Ballenstedt was the only new building of such a school. The foundation stone was laid in 1936, and construction took many years. It was not until October 1942 that the teaching building was handed over to its intended purpose. In 1943, the NPEA Anhalt took over the school operations of the Ilfeld monastery school, which had also been used as an NPEA since 1934.
