Catholic main church in the city center
This church is the Main Church of Haltern and is located directly on the marketplace in the city center.
It was completed in 1877 according to plans by August Hanemann.
During the reconstruction from 1874 to 1877, the medieval church with its Romanesque tower from before the founding of the town had to be demolished. August Hanemann designed the church in the style of North German brick Gothic, with a tower 80 m high.
The previous late Gothic church with the Romanesque tower, which shaped the old city views, was not only too small, as the population had doubled from 1750 to 1851 (to 3645).
In 1749, news of a miracle through the cross in St. Sixtus spread like wildfire for the first time. People pilgrimaged there in crowds. For this reason, the church was built in its current size starting in 1874.
It was the decade of the completion of the Cologne Cathedral, which also had some influence.
