Wassenberg Castle is a hill castle on the "Burgberg" at 92 m above sea level in the town of Wassenberg in the district of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The history of the castle and the town of Wassenberg are closely connected. In 1020, Emperor Henry II donated the castle and land of Wassenberg to Gerardus of Antoing. He then called himself Gerhard Count of Wassenberg, thereby founding the House of Wassenberg, which established the County of Guelders after four generations at Wassenberg Castle. However, Wassenberg Castle has been in existence for significantly longer; the predecessor building was likely a Roman fortification. After Count Gerhard III of Wassenberg participated in the Crusades, he founded St. George's Basilica and an associated provostry. In 1118, Gerhard IV Count of Wassenberg completed the construction of the provostry and church, which were consecrated on September 30, 1118, by Bishop Otbert of Liège. In 1131, Jutta of Wassenberg, Gerhard's sister, married Walram of Limburg, thereby bringing Wassenberg into Limburg. Since the main line of the Counts of Wassenberg continued into the County of Guelders, the son of Duke Henry of Limburg, who inherited the castle and land of Wassenberg in 1202, could only call himself "Lord of Wassenberg." Wassenberg already received city rights in 1273, which were confirmed during the municipal reorganization in 1972.
