The monasteries of the Gudenå River - Tvilum

The Augustinian Monastery in Tvilum was founded around 1246-49. Tvilum Monastery likely also served as a seminary for novices and provided education for young noble sons.

The monastery church is well-preserved in Tvilum. The monastery buildings were located south of the church and have been confirmed archaeologically. From investigations, it is known that the monastery had three wings, with the church forming the fourth wing. The four wings enclosed a cloister courtyard. The monastery's farmstead was situated where Tvilumgård is today, about 1.5 km north of the monastery.

The church is prominently located in the Gudenå Valley and was originally built in the 1200s as a rather short church. It wasn't until the 1400s that the church was expanded to the west. Around 1500, a very large altarpiece was erected, which still exists in the church today. Today, Tvilum Church is the only visible remnant of the monastery.

The monastery was dissolved in 1537, and the monastery buildings likely disappeared quite quickly, while the monastery church became a parish church upon the dissolution of the monastery.
