Bishopric of Empúries

The bishopric of Empúries was a bishopric that extended through the Empordà area. Probably, there was a bishop since the fourth century, as evidenced by the remains of the Christian bassiclique found in the ancient Greco-Roman city of Empúries. [1] At the beginning of the sixth century, the first bishops appeared until the Saracen occupation when the territory became dependent on the bishopric of Girona. Of the ancient diocese of Empúries we only know its existence and the names of seven bishops who governed it from 516 to 693, by the fact of having gone personally or through procupador to various councils.
