Ripoll Cemetery

The Ripoll Cemetery is a protected monument as a cultural asset of local interest in the municipality of Ripoll.
The Ripoll cemetery, designed by architect Antoni Coll Fort in 1903, represents the end of the medieval tradition that had until then inscribed the cemetery within the urban fabric, constituting in a way the continuity in the space reserved for the living. At this moment, when the cemetery comes under municipal authority, it is moved outside the town. The necropolis of Ripoll consists of two adjacent parallelograms, in which the plots intended for niches are secondary, attached to the limits of the cemetery, and the islands flanking the main axis leading from the entrance to the chapel located at the opposite exterior take on greater importance, where the funerary monuments will be placed to emphasize the monumental character. The modernist and neoclassical influence in the composition of the main elements of the entrance and modernist design of the intersection façade of the two parallelograms is the language used to decorate what constitutes a kind of replica of the ideal city.
