Castle of Orellana la Vieja

The castle of Orellana la Vieja or Orellana la Vieja palace-castle is located in the municipality of Orellana la Vieja, province of Badajoz, Extremadura. Built in the 15th century.

The castle had a quadrangular shape with cylindrical towers at three of its corners, while the Keep Tower was situated at the fourth. This tower, which still stands tall, has a square base and some of its sides still show battlements as well as arrow slits and a coat of arms of the “Orellana” and “Altamirano” families. Originally, it was a “strong house” from the 15th century, and in the 16th century important innovations were made, both defensive and for habitation and services, especially in the Keep Tower, which was adapted as a palace.[2]​
