El Garxal

El Garxal is a wetland located to the left of the current mouth of the Ebre River. Its surface is around 280 hectares. It is a very shallow lagoon that is still forming, with significant dynamism. Its origin is quite recent. It dates back to the mid-20th century, when the current inlet was opened during a storm, replacing the previously existing North inlet. The Garxal is made up of small crescent-shaped islands that change shape according to the sediment deposition brought by the river. The pond or lagoon is surrounded by a well-preserved dune ecosystem, fixed by vegetation, primarily of tamarisk. The entry of freshwater occurs exclusively through the river, as there is no drainage channel from the rice fields entering it. The exchange with seawater occurs during storms.
