Metropol Parasol - Seville

The Metropol Parasol, also known as Las Setas de Sevilla (The Mushrooms of Seville) , is one of the most striking and modern structures in Seville.

The structure, located in Plaza de la Encarnación, was designed by German architect Jürgen Mayer and construction began in 2005 and was completed in 2011 . He was inspired by the vaults of Seville Cathedral and the ficus trees on the Plaza de Cristo de Burgos.

Architecture and Design :

The structure is made of wood and is one of the largest wooden structures in the world . It consists of six enormous parasol-like elements that extend across the square. The construction of the Metropol Parasol took several years. The project faced several technical challenges, mainly due to its scale and use of materials.

The structure is constructed from laminated wood that has been specially treated to withstand the climatic conditions in Seville. The Metropol Parasol houses different functions on different levels. The roof offers panoramic views over Seville along a 250m long path accessible by lift and is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.

On the ground floor there is a market, the Mercado de la Encarnación , where local products are sold. In addition, there are restaurants and cafes where visitors can enjoy the local cuisine.

Below ground is the Antiquarium, an archaeological museum displaying Roman and Moorish remains excavated during construction.

The building is illuminated at night, making for an impressive sight and a different experience compared to a daytime visit.
