Parroquia de San Andrés - Seville

Descripción

Its construction dates back to the 14th century and the architect who designed the church is unknown. The basic style is Gothic-Mudejar, with Baroque reforms carried out by the architect Pedro de Silva in the 18th century.

The church has three facades.

The main door is the most interesting. It corresponds to the original layout of the church, although it has undergone later changes, and has a flared ogival opening. The upper archivolt is decorated with diamond-shaped points on the wire. Above this is a niche with a representation of God the Father. The whole is crowned with a cornice supported by corbels in the shape of lion heads.

The doorway opening onto the Plaza de San Andrés has a semicircular opening with molded Tuscan pilasters . It is crowned by a broken curved pediment, in the center of which is a semicircular opening with the image of the Immaculate Conception.

Epistle Door: The third doorway in the wall of the epistle nave has a simple design. It has an opening with a very low arch, framed by Tuscan pilasters. It is finished with a broken triangular pediment, in the center of which is a semicircular arch with a mixtilinear pediment.

The apse and tower also stand out on the outside of the church. The apse, which has remained freestanding, has strong buttresses. In between are artistic spire-shaped openings, some of which are now closed. The whole is crowned by a cornice with curled modillions and a parapet with curved pinnacles.

The main altarpiece was made by Felipe Fernández del Castillo and Benito de Hita y Castillo between 1732 and 1739. It consists of a pew, a three-aisled body and an attic. In the center of the altarpiece is a statue of the Immaculate Conception that is considered the work of Jerónimo Hernández from around 1570.

There are three chapels in the wall of the epistle nave:

Sacrament Chapel: this has two square sections, covered with semi-circular vaults on trumpets and finished on the outside with battlements. Chapel of Santa Marta: this chapel has a square plan and provides access to the tower on the left wall.
Baptistry: also with a square plan, it is covered with a simple ribbed vault, the ribs of which start from corbels in the shape of heads. In the Gospel nave, on the other side, is the Chapel of the Sacred Heart , with a square plan and covered with a vault of canvases on an octagonal crown.
