The birthplace of chemist Jean Baptiste André Dumas was here in Alès. He is born here on 14 July 1800. He worked on organic analysis and synthesis, as well as the determination of atomic weights and molecular weights by measuring vapor densities. He also developed a method for the analysis of nitrogen in compounds.
Alès is the center of a mining district and hosts the école des mines d’‘Alès. The 16th century Alès was an important Huguenot centre. The town was one of the most important markets for raw silk and cocoons in the south of France
