The commune of Guillestre is situated at an average altitude of 1,000 m, overlooking the left bank of the gorges of Guil, just before its confluence with the Durance. Located at the gateway to the Queyras, it is the only access point to this valley, especially during the winter months (the Agnel pass and the Izoard pass are closed for part of the year).
Guillestre is a crossroads and a starting point for the Izoard pass, the Vars pass, and the Agnel pass. It is also a transit point between Embrun and Briançon.
