In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it belongs to the lords of the Island, who hold it as a fief from the counts of Geneva. It was enfeoffed around 1219 to the Monthouz family. At the "Island," there are then the count's prisons, a role it will have until 1355, after which a mint will be established there until 1392. Under Amadeus VIII, the La Croix family will take charge of it for some time. Janus, the second son of Duke Louis of Savoy, having inherited Geneva, redeems the enfeoffment and gives the "Island" to his wife Hélène de Luxembourg. It will remain in this family until the sixteenth century, when it is transformed into a princely house.
