Cathédrale Saint-Cyr Sainte-Julitte

The cathedral of Saint-Cyr Sainte-Julitte is unusual in that it has two choirs, one Romanesque to the west and the other Gothic to the east. The Romanesque choir is distinguished by its crypt and the gigantic Christ in Glory painted on the apse's cul-de-four vault. The Gothic chevet, meanwhile, offers visitors a compendium of architectural history, from the 6th-century baptistery to the 20th-century stained-glass windows. In fact, the cathedral has another special feature: contemporary stained glass windows. This initiative followed the destruction of almost all the windows during the aerial bombardment of 16 July 1944. A number of leading painters, including Viallat, Alberola, Honegger and Rouan, were chosen to design the windows.

Access and opening times :
The Romanesque section is currently closed to the public for renovation. You can, however, see the Gothic section with its stained glass windows and the magnificent Nevers earthenware Stations of the Cross.
