The Bos van Mormal is an ancient forest area. Historically, it remained largely forested because the region was less cultivated for a long time and served as a hunting ground and wood source for the surrounding area. Despite large-scale logging during World War I (two-thirds of the forest was cut down at that time), it has been replanted as a deciduous forest, primarily with oak, beech, and hornbeam. A part of the forest is protected as a Natura 2000 area, preserving its natural character and biodiversity. The combination of a suitable substrate, protected status, and limited historical intervention has ensured that the Bos van Mormal is today the largest deciduous forest in the Nord department of France.
