The Saint-Jean chapel is located in the hamlet of "Saint-Jean," in the municipality of Campénéac, in Morbihan. The chapel and the adjoining priory are said to have been founded by knights of the Order of the Temple in the 13th century on the site of a 6th-century hermitage, before being assigned to the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem during the dissolution of the order in 1312. The establishment was originally to be immersed in the Paimpont forest, which was larger before the deforestation related to metallurgical activities, making it a suitable place for a hermitage.
