The Pilat Regional Nature Park is one of the 101 regional nature parks (PNR) of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Labeled in 1974, it is historically the second regional nature park created in the region and is one of the first in France.
The park covers the entire Pilat massif, in the foothills of the Massif Central, along the Loire and Rhône departments.
Restricted to the north / west by the Gier valley and to the east by the Rhone valley, the southern and western borders lead to the gates of the Haute-Loire and the Ardèche, and a few kilometers from Saint-Etienne.
The park comprises 47 municipalities of the Loire and the Rhône on a territory of 700 km2, for a density of 80.2 inhabitants / km2 (fairly high density for a nature park).
It is one of the most populated PNR in France. Because of the diversity of the territory, but especially because the management of each regional nature park is connected to the municipalities and includes local elected representatives, the Pilat regional nature park is divided into four zones, closely linked to the local communities of municipalities. :
In the north, the "Condrieu region" of course refers to the area corresponding to the municipalities on the right bank of the Vienne and Condrieu urban community, with the exception of the municipalities of Sainte-Colombe and Loire-sur-Rhône.
In the intermediate part to the west the "land of Vulture" and the urban community of Saint-Etienne Metropole.
To the east, the "Pilat Rhone" and the community of communes of the Rhone Pilat.
In the south, the "Pilat Mounts" and the Pilat Mountains Community of Communes.
