Église du haut du tot

Raised at 840 m of altitude, this church is not only the highest of the Vosges department: it was built in one year by the parishioners! It is open during the day and can be visited with a guide. Contact Daniel Thiriet at 03.29.61.73.24.

An unusual construction

The distance from the places of worship posed a problem for the inhabitants of Haut du Tôt who had to travel 16 to 20 km each way to attend religious services in the churches of Vagney, Rochesson, Gérardmer or Le Tholy, depending on where they lived

At the beginning of the 19th century, the idea of building a church in the center of the plateau became the major concern of many and their limited means did not discourage them. During the winter of 1831-1832, the inhabitants prepared the stones for the future church, most of which came from a sandstone quarry located a few kilometers away in the direction of Tholy. Others cut down trees and squared them to prepare the framework

The first stone was blessed in February 1832. All the inhabitants participated in the work and on September 17, 1832, the first mass was celebrated. The church was then covered with essis, as well as the facades exposed to the prevailing winds. The benches, still in place today, are all different and also made by the inhabitants.
