Like many others in the Ardenne Valley, this chapel is dedicated to Saint Roch, patron saint and protector of plague sufferers. In the early 17th century, a terrible plague epidemic ravaged the region, and Saint Roch was often invoked as the saint who assisted his devotees against the contagion of the plague, among other things... Saint Roch probably brings to mind the legend of Saint Roch and his dog. Here's a brief summary: Saint Roch was born in Montpellier in 1349. When he came of age, he distributed all his possessions to the poor and set off on a pilgrimage to Rome. He stopped off in several Italian towns afflicted by the Black Death, and was healed many times. Unfortunately, he too caught the disease. He withdrew to a forest to avoid infecting others. He was visited only by a neighboring lord?s dog, who brought him daily a loaf of bread stolen from his master?s table. Intrigued by his dog's activities, the lord followed him and discovered Roch deep in his retreat. He rescued him, and Roch regained his health. Note Chapel only visible from the outside.
