The village of Gordes is often considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. The village is located in the heart of the regional nature park the Luberon. Other attractions in the nearby area include the ochre quarry near Roussillon, and the Abbey of Sénanque. This little town is known as one of the most beloved vacation destinations in the region.
History of Gordes
Excavations show that people have lived on the rock where Gordes is built since prehistoric times. The name Gordes is derived from the Celtic word ‘Vordense’. The strategic location (on top of a rock) was valued by the Romans, who built a fortified castle here. Around the 11th century, the village of Gordes emerged as more and more people from the surrounding area settled near the castle.
During the Middle Ages, Gordes faced the raiders of Raymond de Turenne, and the religious wars. It was decided to build fortification walls around the castle. Only a few parts of these walls are still visible today.
The 18th and 19th centuries are considered very lucrative for the village. The population grows rapidly, and the artisanal industry in the village brings wealth and work.
In 1909, the village and its surroundings were shaken by an earthquake. The traces of this earthquake are still clearly visible in the village church.
During World War II, some residents of this village actively contributed to the French resistance. On August 21, 1944, a German patrol near the village was attacked by the resistance. The next day, on August 22, 1944, the village faced retaliatory actions from the German occupiers. The population was ordered to stay indoors. Those who were late or did not cooperate were shot dead in cold blood.
