Bastion 28 - Dunkirk

The last remains of the successive walls are bastion 32, built in 1874, and bastion 28 , built in the northeast in 1882–1883.

From 1818 to 1848, Louis XVIII had a new rampart built based on plans by Michaud, a military engineer. These fortifications, surrounded by moats with bastions and spikes, included 10 city gates.

In 1823, the bastioned ramparts of the Lower Town were modified in the south and a redoubt was added in the east. In 1843, the fortifications were extended to the south-west. The Jeu de Mail was now connected to the city and surrounded by two bastions . From 1852 to 1870 , the fortifications were extended: in the west, the new port infrastructures (Bassin des Chasses, diversion canal and Bassin de l'Ouest), which had become part of the city, were defended by 6 bastions, from the Estran in the north to the Mardyck Canal in the south.

To the east, the Exutoire canal, defended by a series of bastions and pincers known as the "eastern sea wall", was fully integrated into the city. From 1870 to 1883, the last fortification campaign of the city: 4 bastions were built along the Exutoire canal .

On 28 February 1921, the Chamber of Deputies passed a bill to decommission the ramparts of Dunkirk . From 1929 to 1936, the fortifications were dismantled and in 1933 the disused land was transferred to the city.
