Peyruis is called Peiruís in Provençal. The name is said to come from Petronius Ruit, a Roman consul who was ambushed. The origins of the village date back to the 2nd century.
Peyruis has 2,593 inhabitants and is located at the foot of densely wooded hills. The village is dominated by the remnants of the feudal castle, which was dismantled during the French Revolution, and the impressive remains of the walls still testify to this. The leveled foundations of the castle, the semi-circular vault and the partition walls seem to date from the 16th or 17th century. The massive and voluminous former keep has been almost entirely preserved and has been converted into a pigeon tower.
The Church of Saint-Nicolas
The parish church of Saint-Nicolas features Gothic elements (15th century), stained glass windows (16th-17th century), and a collection of murals representative of the previous century. There are also traces of old houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. On the edge of the village, near the cemetery, stands the Saint-Roch chapel (1720-1721). It has been restored and exhibitions are held throughout the year.
Fountain Land
Everywhere in the village, ancient fountains flow with spring water. They are scattered throughout the narrow streets and, with the exception of the one near Les Écoles, all have a washhouse. In Provence, these are places where people gather. Stop by Place de la République to watch a game of pétanque under the lush plane trees. You can also take advantage of their shade to read the poems of local storyteller and poet Henri Bérard (1869-1953).
