The original functionChapel of the "Pénitents Blancs" (White Penitents) was built in 1645. One of the oldest buildings in Saint-Tropez , older than the main church (Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption).
These confraternities of penitents were active in caring for the poor, the sick, and the dying. They also played an important role in religious processions such as the Bravades . The members of the confraternity marched from this chapel during the annual Bravades, dressed in white robes with hoods. The chapel symbolized mercy and humility (hence the name: Miséricorde = mercy).
The simple façade with a small cross has a restrained style, befitting the penitents. The interior was originally richly decorated with religious art, statues, and candlesticks. A wooden ceiling in Provençal style. The altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde). Many original elements have been preserved but are rarely exhibited.
