At the request of William III, George London and Henry Wise created a maze for Hampton Court Palace in 1690. The same plan of the maze would be used two hundred years later by Psychologist Willard Small at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, to test rats and their memory. The reason why Small took over this labyrinth was that he looked in the Encyclopaedia Brittanica for the word Labyrinth and found a plan of the maze there. He made it a rectangle, while Hampton Court has the shape of a trapezium.
