Zagori has always been characterized by its very difficult accessibility due to the mountainous terrain; this provided greater security and stability. During the Byzantine Empire, the relative safety of Zagori meant that groups of soldiers occasionally built and settled villages there. Of the many gorges in Zagori, the Vikos Gorge is the largest and most photogenic.
