Flysch profile

The road from Methoni-Finikounda cuts through a series of hills constructed from flysch. Along the way you can see the strongly folded layers of the flysch that give you a bit of a sense of the tectonic forces that acted on these rocks. Here you get a collection of all kinds of folds in the rock: anticlines, synclines, knee folds, suitcase folds,... It looks like a geological textbook.

Flysch is a highly stratified rock with alternating sandstone and shale. The flysch was deposited under water, near the shoreline, when huge amounts of material eroded from the mountains and deposited into the sea. This rock is associated with orogeny phases. After the deposition of the rock, it was strongly folded, as you can see here.
