The layered schists are fractured by tectonic pressure. Along these fractures (diaclases), fluid minerals can penetrate and precipitate. These minerals can accumulate, forming iron ore veins as iron-bearing solutions flow through the diaclases into the rock and crystallize there. This process is called hydrothermal mineralization . The diaclases thus form a channel for the minerals and are the source of ore formation.
Silver and gold veins can also be found here on the island. Whether iron, gold, or silver veins develop depends on the composition of the mineralizing fluids and the geological conditions. Gold, like iron, often occurs in hydrothermal veins, but usually requires specific conditions such as higher temperatures and the presence of sulfur-bearing minerals.
Sifnos was known in antiquity for its gold, silver, and iron mines. Historically, gold and silver were mined on Sifnos, indicating the presence of such mineralization processes. The mines were primarily located in the northeast, near the area of Saint Sostis .
