Street of the Heroes

The Strada degli Eroi is a road built by the Italian military in the 1930s on Monte Pasubio. It commemorates the twelve Italian soldiers who were awarded the Gold Medal of Valor during World War I on the Pasubio.

The Strada degli Eroi was constructed on an already existing network of paths and roads that had been established by the Italian army during World War I. As in the case of the nearby Strada delle 52 Gallerie, this network served the rapid and safe supply of troops and materials to the Pasubio front. Thus, the Italians already built a narrow path in 1916, which was quickly expanded into a roadway, from Passo Pian delle Fugazze through the Val di Fieno to the summit with Val Canale. Since the crossing and onward route into Val Canale was highly avalanche-prone, a tunnel was driven into the ridge in the second half of 1916, separating the two valleys. This tunnel was named in 1917 after General Giuseppe D’Havet, commander of the engineering troops of the V Army Corps stationed at Pasubio.
