Badia of Saint Peter

The Abbey of St. Peter is a sacred building located in Badia Pozzeveri in Altopascio.

Dating back to 1039, it was transformed into a canonical residence in 1059 and passed to the Benedictines in 1086; in 1103 it was granted to the Camaldolese. The abbey reached its peak power at the end of the 13th century, but after the battle of Altopascio, it began to decline: the area became depopulated and was prey to the raids of brigands; in 1408 the monks definitively abandoned the abbey, which passed to the chapter of the cathedral of Lucca. Used as a parish church, the church was transformed over the centuries and only retains traces of its medieval layout on the outside, in the apse area.
Next to the Lucchese court, it has long ceased to serve as a parish church, replaced in this role by a new building, constructed in 1976, near the inhabited area. The ancient abbey, now fallen into disrepair, is at risk of collapse due to neglect from both institutional entities and citizens. Only the parish priest, a few years ago, managed, thanks also to private donations, to have the roof of the canonical residence repaired.
