Fountain of Genius in Villa Giulia - Palermo

The marble statue that tops the fountain is one of eight monumental representations of the genius of Palermo . Of the several sculptures that decorate Villa Giulia , this one, together with the Dodecahedron Bell, is considered the most important and significant .

The sculpture was made in 1778 by Ignazio Marabitti after a design by Nicolò Palma, who wanted to place it close to the Botanical Garden , at the end of the avenue accessible from the entrance of Villa Giulia overlooking the sea.

The structural layout of the fountain is instead similar to the Genio Fountain in Piazza Revolution , even if more elegant and larger, and with the characteristics of the late Sicilian Baroque. The work consists of a circular pool of Billiemi stone , in the center of which is a rock dominated by a sculpture of the Genius in Carrara marble, 2.56 meters high.

The sculpture represents the splendor and virtues of the city, personified by the patron god of Palermo feeding a snake from his breast , dressed in Roman armor and holding a scepter in his hand, a royal symbol. The Genius has an eagle next to him, the symbol of the city; at his feet a dog , symbol of loyalty, and a face, symbol of power. On the rock is a horn of plenty, a symbol of abundance; a shield with the Triscele, the coat of arms of Sicily and 2 plaques.
