The S an Salvatore Church, few elements of which have been incorporated into the Carmine Church , gives its name to the Gate.
It is a remake from 1581 , as can be read on the mask carved on the left side of the arch. The building is clearly inspired by the Renaissance , with the arch and columns supported by two stylophorous elephants, and the outer facade, richly decorated in Hispano-Moorish taste with arabesques in the form of volutes and elegantly modeled bas-reliefs, depicting rampant lions.
The balcony above the door is decorated with three coats of arms, that of the city, that of the then ruling House of Austria and that of the Sotomajor family, in memory of the captain who had it built.
