Saint Gertrude's Church

The current church building, completed in 1477, was designed by Everaert Spoorwater. He designed a new choir section with ambulatory, jet chapels and side chapels in the nave in the style of the Brabant Gothic.

In 1580, during the Eighty Years' War, the church was looted and then used as a military warehouse. In 1586 the church was decorated for the Reformed.

During the shelling of Bergen op Zoom by the French in 1747, the church was largely destroyed. The rebuilding, which began in 1750, had a sober character. The tower received the current crown.

From 1586 to 1966, the reformed municipality owned this building. The Reformed congregation, which had used the church since 1586, did not have to return it during the French occupations. After all, in 1747 the building was largely destroyed after the bombardment by the French. The rebuilding took place with Protestant funds.

In 1966 the church was handed over to the congregation.

New mischief struck when the church was hit by another fire in 1972. The entire interior, including Del Haye's 18th-century pipe organ, was lost. In the 80s restoration started again. The entire roof of the nave and aisles, which had been severely damaged, was replaced by a flat gravel roof.
